Monetizing carbon credits: enabling storage and supporting PPAs

Last Wednesday, ACERA hosted a new edition of its Desayunos para Socios (Members’ Breakfasts) focused on a pressing question: How can we strengthen the viability of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in today’s market? This exclusive session, examined the monetization of carbon credits as a tool to generate additional revenue and support power purchase agreements (PPAs).

During the discussion, Gonzalo Díaz Pearcy, our Managing Director and founder, opened by presenting the opportunity of the programme we are developing and explained how monetizing carbon credits can unlock additional revenue streams and strengthen the business case for BESS. He illustrated how these mechanisms can bolster revenue and mitigate risk, showing that storage projects can become more viable when carbon credits are integrated into their financial models.

Following Gonzalo’s presentation, Jorge Cruz Villalobos, our Business Development Associate, outlined the opportunities that Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement and the Chile–Switzerland bilateral agreement offer for carbon credit projects. Article 6.2 establishes a framework for countries to cooperate internationally by authorising the transfer of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), enabling more cost‑effective global mitigation efforts and helping nations meet their Nationally Determined Contributions.

The breakfast is part of a member‑exclusive cycle designed to promote high‑level technical exchange and applied learning among those driving the energy transition. We were joined by representatives from AES Andes, Atlas Renewable Energy, AustriaEnergy, Celeo Chile, CVE, ENGIE Chile, Grenergy, LiBR3, CircularTec, Nala Renewables, Zelestra and others, reflecting the broad collaboration needed to advance storage solutions.

Thanks to everyone who participated.
